Andre Lira is a Brazilian-American interactive media artist and creative technologist building audio-visual installations that spark delight.

Hover Craft2025 An interface for music creation built for the musician and non-musician alike, exploring how to drive interest in the art of music making by making it as easy as humanly possible to generate pleasing melodies and patterns. Users hover their hands over physical elements mirroring an on-screen UI to generate notes and modulate sound parameters such as instrument, scale, chord, and arpeggio. LEDs on the physical interface light up upon sound creation and parameter changes to signal successful input.

Hover Craft is the artist’s Masters thesis project at NYU-ITP.

Detailed information and context can be found here.

Technical information on how the project was built in TouchDesigner can be found here, in a featured talk at the 2025 edition of the Digital Arts and Technology Festival.

Lux Temporalis
2024
A clock made of light that connects to the US Naval Observatory’s atomic clock via Wifi. LEDs indicate the current hour, minute, and seconds, and the beams of light produce abstract representations of a standard clock’s dials.

Sonoluminescence
2024
An abstract music visualizer where notes across 5 octaves are displayed on 5 vertical tubes of LEDs. Users can play notes manually on a MIDI keyboard or select from various pre-made themes from old videogame soundtracks on iPads. Users can also select different colorways for the lighting patterns.

The Pitch Rail
2024
An instrument built for live performance that uses a distance sensor to calculate space between the main control box and a wall. Three buttons on the side allow the user to play the three notes of a major chord - the root, third, and fifth notes. As the user slides the control box up and down the rail, the selected note modulates up and down.

Custom visuals for the live performance display current note information on an abstract piano-like interface.

Smile
2024

A series of fabricated objects :)

The Circular Sequencer
2023

A 16-step sequencer that uses color data from LED candles to create musical patterns. Sensors on the arm of the device convert color data into different drum hits and notes, and a control panel allows for note-shifting  and muting  any of the three channels (drums, bass, melody).

The Shy Pumpkin
2023

A pumpkin that is afraid of human contact. Approaching it will cause it to back away in fear until the user gets too close, activating a rage response.

Emoji Dancer
2025
An algorithm for converting image pixel data into emojis of the closest color.

Image-to-MIDI Algorithm
2025
An algorithm for converting image pixel data into MIDI information for sonifying pictures.
